With Help from Friends, Teen with Cerebral Palsy Took First

I'm Gabe Garza with today's health news. Sometimes you need a little help from your friends. That was certainly the case for 14-year-old Nathan, a Michigan teen who recently won a track meet thanks to support from his teammates. Nathan was born prematurely and diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

But that hasn't stopped him from participating in Middle School track with the aid of a walker. According to the Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation, cerebral palsy is the most common physical disability among children. It is marked by reduced muscle coordination and other physical impairments and is usually caused by damage to the brain before birth. Teammates said that an unknown supporter let them know it would be a great gesture if they ran along side Nathan. So the team did just that, letting Nathan take the top spot in the race. Teammates went on to say that they're all part of a family, and everyone deserves a victory. They wanted to give that victory to Nathan.
