What are the Best Treatments for Sesamoiditis with Seattle Podiatrist Dr Larry Huppin
Today, we are going to talk about a fairly difficult to treat problem called sesamoiditis. The sesamoid bones of the foot are these two little bones right here and they sit right under the big first metatarsal bone but really they are there to act kind of as a pulley or an attachment for muscles that start at the heel then run up to the sesamoids and then into the toes. The problem with these things is that they take a tremendous amount of pressure with every step that you take and sometimes they become inflamed - that is what itis means. Itis means inflammation, so sesamoiditis is just an inflammation or swelling of these bones; but can be very painful partly because you are putting so much pressure on those bones with every step. That also makes it really difficult to heal this problem sometimes.
What I�m going to talk about today is first, what you can do yourself at home to try and take care of this problem, and then I will let you know when you should go and see someone to go further. First of all, our goal here is to get the pressure off of here and get that pressure back here or over here, and just to get that pressure off of the sesamoids. You can start with good over-the-counter arch support. You want one that is fairly high in the arch and is pretty firm so it transfers the pressure from here back to here. You can find some suggestions on our website; just go to the website, do a search for sesamoid or sesamoiditis or ball of foot pain, and you will actually go find a whole list of things that you can do at home to try and help this problem.
So that is number one: use good arch supports and use that arch support in a stable shoe - something that is firm on the heel and does not twist too easily. A good running shoe like that would work fine. In addition, you can take that arch support and you can add something to the bottom and just take some moleskin that you might get it to the pharmacy, lay it right here so this is the first metatarsal so you can lay it here to transfer pressure off of this area and get more over here so again we are going to get pressure off of that. Other thing you can do is to get a sandal like this one here and again you can find this on the website and this has a great arch support on it so it will also help to transfer pressure off of ball of the foot, and you want to basically be wearing these 100% of the time and do not go barefoot at all for a few weeks. At the same time be icing this area, and again a lot more detail on the website that you can do at home; however, if you try treating this for two or three weeks and you are not seeing any improvement, get in and see a podiatrist. If you let this problem go too long, we find that it can take weeks, even months, to get over it and so you really want to address that quickly if it is bothering you. The other thing you have to worry about if it is really painful is that you can actually have a fracture of the sesamoids and that is something that you definitely need to see a doctor about.
