Upper Back Pain Treatments with Graston Technique
We're talking about mid-back pain and treatments for that. Traditional physical therapy and chiropractic treatments involved adjusting exercises, stretches, heat, electric, ice and cold laser to help get rid of the pain, muscle spasms and tenderness in any area. Many people end up overworking those muscle groups and then develop scar tissue with them.
Scar tissue is going to respond to massage therapy and Graston Technique. So someone who sits at the computer slouching too much - go ahead, sit in your usual computer position. He slouches forward overworking this upper back area. So he feels tightness and soreness developing through this area in the afternoon and evening hours. Many times that can help trigger a headache later in the day. We're going to work in getting this area to heal and improve so it can handle more stress and strain before producing headaches.
Graston Technique, this stainless steel tool - we're applying cocoa butter to the area so it slides across the skin nice and easy. As we work this area, we feel a big knot right in that muscle group. This is the place that he's described a lot of his pain from occurring. Graston does a great job of breaking up scar tissue in a fiber-to-fiber level. Massage therapy does better to big muscle bundle to muscle bundle area. We're going to combine Graston and massage therapy to treat the problem from the inside out and the outside in. You can see the dark red dots developing on that scar tissue spot. If we kept digging, we might get a little bit of bruising but we're going to control that with some ice.
He's going to ice several more times today to decrease any pain or discomfort. He's going to work on the exercises and stretches we've given him to help get this area to heal. Most people tend to respond very quickly to these treatments and their headaches decrease dramatically in the next few weeks.
