Kambou Sie has had an extremely difficult life. When he was 11 years old, he began developing an enourmous face tumor. Kambour is from the ivory coast, and as he was growing up, his neighbors would talk about how he was some kind of monster. When he became ill, his neighbors said that he would never get better, and he would also never be loved. The tumor began growing so large that it began to force his eyes to close, and his mouth became blocked, which made it difficult for him to breathe. His mother abandoned him because she couldn’t cope with his facial disfigurement.
After the disease got worse, everyone left him. His father was the only one that took care of him, but couldn’t afford to get him treatment. Now, 6 years later, thanks to the Liliane Foundation charity and the Italian charity A voice for Padre Pio, he was flown to Italy so that he could be diagnosed. Samples of tissue were removed from his face. Doctors say that he has Burkitt Lymphoma, where immine cells attack themselves. If left untreated, it is fatal.
Burkitt is actually a type of tumor that grows the fastest, and would have killed him already, but for some reason he tumor is growing slower than usual. Kambou finally received the treatment he needed. He underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and stem cell replacement. The treatment took over a month, but it radically reduced the size of the tumor. This is what he looks like now.
The swelling has reduced so much that he can finally see. He will also have cosmetic surgery to improve the look of his face and remove the dead tissue. His mother actually got into touch with him, and offered an emotional apology. On behalf of IO,Good luck to Kambou on his road to recovery.
