The president has declared the opioid epidemic a national emergency. So we're tackling the crisis head-on all season here on The Doctors. But for Cynthia, that crisis is personal. It's threatening her daughter Sarah's life. Let's have a look.
I just don't know how I'm alive. I legit died twice. (heart monitor flatlines) Why are you giving me that look? Because I can smell it in the bathroom. I told her I don't want that in this house. Jimmy, you got anything I can buy off you by any chance? Black, or-- black? Make want to (beep) drool right now, just, like, thinking about it. I don't know what to do.
I'm having an anxiety attack. I'm your (beep) daughter. Yeah, okay.
Yes, you do. My youngest daughter, Sarah, who's 20 years old, has a severe heroin addiction. (dog barking) When Sarah was a child, she was like a bright light, very creative, very artistic. Everybody loved her. Sarah's and I relationship was really, really close. The sweetest little girl. At the age of like, probably 13 and that was a hard year, there was a divorce and she's probably put in the middle. When I first started using I was really young, 14.
Up until then I tried everything though, I was so curious. When I tried heroin, I like, never did anything else ever again. That was like my (beep). That was my drug. I had no idea how bad Sarah's problem was with drugs.
Meth, xanax, heroin, alcohol, that was all in her system. I don't know how she didn't die then. After that she got clean, she was doing really well. And then I got pregnant. And he mentioned like, getting an abortion. Like, that he wasn't ready and whatnot.
I tried telling him like, no one's ever ready you know, but, that (beep) broke my heart. So I agreed to do it. I think really, that's what triggered this spiral. I just started using more often. And then I started getting super sick if I didn't use it.
It just happened so fast. I use black tar heroin, to wake up, and then right after, otherwise I'll just end up falling right back to sleep. So that's, that's my morning coffee right there. She's very sick. She's maybe 95 pounds? She couldn't even walk a block on her own. (wet coughing) Gosh, it's messed up my lungs so much. (ambulance sirens) Three months ago we went to the emergency room for her eating problems. She was there for five days.
They diagnosed her were COPD. She coughs up blood now. I bring her food if she needs food. You're just my chauffer? She tells me, "oh I need you to pick me up" or "I need to come change my clothes." Like, I (beep) needing it. As a mom, you'll do anything for your kids. You will.
I feel helpless. You just pray that one day she'll just wake up and you know, be over this part of her life. You're basically watching a bright light dim.
It's hard. It's hard. I miss the old Sarah so much. It kills me to think that I might have to bury her. How do you see your future? Either dead honest, honestly, or, I don't know. It's really hard, it's really hard. (wet coughing).
