Phalen's Test⎟Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This is going to be a video on Phalen's Test to test for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The carpal tunnel is the passageway on the palmar side of the hand that is enclosed by the flexor retinaculum. Which spans from the Pisiform bone and the hook of the Hamate to the tubercle of the Trapezium bone. It is already narrow by nature as 10 different tendons and the median nerve pass through it. As soon as any of the structures swall or degenerate this can lead to compression of the median nerve, which is then called the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The Phalen's Test was described to have the sensitivity of 85% and the specificity of 89% for the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome according to research by Bruske et al. In the year 2002. To perform the Phalen's Test ask your patient to flex his wrists maximally and hold the dorsal side of his hands together for 1 minute.
The test is positive if the patient experiences tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and the lateral half of the ring finger. Which indicates Carpal Tunnel Syndrome by pressure on the median nerve. OK guys, this was the Phalen's Test to test for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
