Author: Gulfport Memorial

Welcome to memorial health & you. Did you know that as many as half of all women over age forty-five experience some form of pelvic prolapse? a potentially serious and painful condition. With us today is Dr. Champ weeks, memorial urologist and medical director of robotic surgery. Dr. Weeks, what causes pelvic prolapse? long-term strain on a woman's lower abdomen can cause the muscles and ligaments in this area to weaken.

Usually after menopause, childbirth or a hysterectomy. Advanced age, weight gain and strenuous physical labor can also allow pelvic tissue, such as the bladder and uterus, if present, to fall out of place. What are the symptoms? often my complain of pelvic fullness, or heaviness, pain, loss of bladder and/or bowel control recurrent urinary tract infections, even bleeding. With an appropriate diagnosis, pelvic exercises or other conservative therapy may be all that's necessary. And if the symptoms persist? well there are several treatment options available. Severe pelvic prolapse can be treated with a robotic sacrocolpopexy. This procedure allows permanent fixation inside the pelvis to support the organs that have slipped out of place.

Using small instruments at the end of robotic arms, we only need half inch incisions to to perform this surgery. Shorter surgery and recovery times, reduced pain, less blood loss and scarring are just a few of the many benefits. Patients typically return the day after surgery and can resume most normal activities as quickly as one week following the procedure.

Thank you, Dr. Weeks. If you would like to know how you can help prevent and treat pelvic prolapse, call us right now at 228-868-6500 or visit www.gulfportmemorial.com.
