Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon - Peter D. Wearden, MD, PhD, Nemours Cardiac Center Florida
[MUSIC PLAYING] Why did I decided to become a pediatric cardiac surgeon? I was attracted to medicine because I liked the idea of helping people and using science to help people. I was attracted to surgery because I enjoy the work of my hands, and surgery is a creative thing, there's an artistic side to surgery. And I noticed an aptitude for that. Why did I choose pediatrics? There's no more rewarding patient population to care for. The ability of kids to heal can at times seem miraculous. And in the process of helping them, you know that have many, many years ahead of them.
A focus of mine has been improving technology that would allow the heart to rest, that would support the functions of the heart while it recovers. And what we've discovered, just in the last decade, is the ability of kids hearts to recover is truly amazing. There's no way that anything that I do can take away all of the stress and anxiety. But frequently knowledge and feeling included can be comforting to a family. I also want them to know that we're dedicated to them in caring for them as parents, as well as their children. That's our promise. [music playing].
