Neuromas are another foot condition that we see in the office. A nerve is going to run up through the toes going out. At certain places, we can either compress or irritate the soft tissue around it. If we compress or create too much fluid and inflammation, that will squish down that nerve creating pain and irritation, numbness or tingling in the toes. Another condition we get is a true neuroma. When the nerve tissue around the nerve starts getting swollen and inflamed, growing outwards eventually that can compress the nerve creating that numbness and tingling out the toe. We see two different types in the office - the very true neuroma with the change in nerve tissue or the just compression and irritation type. If you've increased your running, changed shoes, have more of a pounding and a pain in this area first leading to the numbness and tingling, that might be a sign of a slow chronic repetitive stress injury creating a neuroma-like sensation compared to a true nerve tissue change.
In the office, we're going to treat for pain and inflammation, decrease that with ice, heat, electric, stretching, some balanced exercise, address the mechanics of the foot especially if this is a running-type injury. If it's a true neuroma, we're going to go through different steps to identify that with an MRI to evaluate the tissue, what's going on in the area. Second, we want to make sure also that we don't have stress fractures in the area creating inflammation with it. The foot is a pretty complex joint with all the muscles, tendons and nerves running through so we can get a lot of pain, a lot of irritation in this area so we can get you to right people, so you can get your neuroma addressed.
