Living with Cerebral Palsy

Author: National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD)

Hello guys. My name is Meagan Rowe and I am a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and everyday I work with people who have physical disabilities, My friend Nakisha here has cerebral palsy, and we are going to be asking her a few questions today about how she lives her life. I work a normal 9 to 5 job. I go to work, leave work.

Go to Lakeshore, Workout, Socialize with my friends, Maybe take in a movie, or go out to dinner. I'm never at home, and that's a good thing. I want to be as normal as possible How long have you been living on your own? About 14 years. So Kisha, the biggest things people say are hard are bathing, eating, dressing, ... When did you learn how to do all those things? My mom taught me that at 7 years of age, She taught me that no one is always going to be around, you're going to have to learn it for yourself, So, I did. Tell us about all the "what if's" something goes wrong, you don't have something you need, and no one is there to help you? I fall, I get back up.

But I know some people that can't get up, It's mostly Pride, that you don't want to ask for help, but sometimes you have to suck it up, and say, "I need help" What is the biggest piece of advise you could give to someone who's trying to be independent and living by themselves? Just really make sure that's what you want to do before you do it. I know a lot of people that moved out before they were ready to live on their own. I was ready to live out on my own, and I had a lot of friends that encouraged me to do it. Thank you Kisha for answering all of our questions. If you have any questions for Kisha or I, just go ahead and leave your questions or comments in the section bellow, a and we'll make sure to answer them and get back to you guys shortly. Thank you for watching!.
