Jin Shin Jyutsu® for Sleep

Author: UKHealthCare

Worry, medication or pain can disrupt your sleep, whether you're a patient or a caregiver. Jin Shin Jyutsu may assist you with insomnia, getting to sleep or returning to sleep after waking in the middle of the night. For falling asleep or going back to sleep, this simple thumb hold is very helpful. Wrap the fingers of one hand around the thumb of the opposite hand, including that soft base of the thumb. When you get into bed or before you go to bed, you can hold the thumb gently - the right hand or the left hand or both, whichever is comfortable.

In bed you can hold your thumb, and as you drift to sleep, the hands will let go as you move into a comfortable position. If you awaken in the night, get up to take your medicine or use the bathroom, get back into bed and use this thumb hold again. For individuals taking steroids, this thumb hold may not be quite as effective. For deep relaxation before bed or throughout the day, do the following series of holds. Hold the right thumb, including the base of the thumb, for at least five minutes. Then hold the right little finger of the same hand for another five minutes. Repeat this sequence on the opposite side, holding the left thumb then the left little finger again for at least five minutes. Next, if it's comfortable for you, while your right hand is placed on the right groin area at the top of the leg, place your left hand on your right shoulder for another five minutes.

You can repeat this sequence throughout the day. For some people, the thumb hold in the middle of the night has an immediate effect. They drift gently back to sleep. For others it may take a few more tries. So give yourself some time, try it for a few nights and see if it gives you some assistance.
