Iliotibial Band Syndrome - Common Running Injuries

Author: Alpha Chiropractic & Physical Therapy

Iliotibial band syndrome is a common condition that we treat in the office. The iliotibial band runs down the side of the leg, comes down to the lower knee where it attaches to help control the stabilization. So it helps keep that knee from wobbling side to side. With especially running, as you get tired, we might start having more of that rocking. So as that tendon comes down to attach, it could set irritation in it, we get big sprains and strains. You'll feel pain down most commonly right up above the knee but also the wrap down, feel like it's crossing over to the inside of the knee. What we're going to work on is getting that tendon to heal. So we're going to break up that scar tissue and irritation with Graston.

We're going to do a lot of physical therapy exercises and stretches to help get this knee stabilized again. It's going to take a little bit of exercise to help balance out that knee to prevent that rock and that tip that happens. People increase their chance of having IT band issues from their foot and ankle mechanics.

If they're weak in their foot, that will create a rocking. If they're wearing the wrong pair of shoes, that will change the running gait, increasing the stress and strain in the IT Band. A lot of times we'll see the outside of the quad get too tight and strong relative to the inside, and all of a sudden that knee has an imbalance. Now we get more of rock or we'll have hip and glut weakness creating a rocking in the pelvis. As that pelvis is shifting side to side, that knee is going with it, and we increase the stress and strain in the IT Band. We're going to look at what's causing your IT Band, helping to put exercises and stretches in place to get that resolved so you don't have future reoccurrences.
