How to use Solu-Cortef

Author: ROAS

Adrenal crisis In this video we are going to demonstrate how to give an emergency injection of Solu-Cortef. If the situation allows it, start by washing your hands. We will be needing the following items: A Solu-Cortef vial, syringe, injection needle, alcohol swab, Band-aid. The Solu-Cortef consists of two compartments. These are separated by an internal stopper. The upper compartment contains fluid, the lower contains powder.

Place the vial on a flat, hard surface. Push the lid down hard to dislodge the stopper. Wait for the solution to clear. You may turn the vial gently upside down a few times, but do not shake. There is a plastic tap on top of the lid.

Remove this to reveal the pink rubber stopper. Notice the small circle marked in the center of the stopper. This is where we are going to inject the needle. Use the alcohol to disinfect the area. Next, attach the injection needle to the syringe. Make sure they are connected tightly. Remove the cap from the needle.

Draw up a few cc's of air. Insert the needle into the center of the rubber stopper. Turn the vial upside down. Inject the air. Draw up the medication. It's ok if you don't get all of the medication. Remove air.

Air bubbles may be removed by flicking on the syringe. Then use the plunger to press it out until you notice a drop of medicine on the tip of the needle. We Will be injecting Solu-Cortef into the muscle of the thigh. Start by disinfecting the injection site. Point the needle at approximately 90 degrees slightly to the right of the thigh. Shoot straight and fast.

Slowly inject the medication. Remove the needle slowly. If necessary, place a Band-aid at the injection site.

Make sure you stay well hydrated and contact medical assistance.
