If you have phlebitis this video will tell you what you need to know and what you need to do to get rid of it. Phlebitis is important. It is a warning sign that you may have a serious problem such as a deep vein thrombosis and if it is neglected it can progress onto become a pulmonary embolism - a potentially life threatening condition in which clots leave the leg and travel to the lungs. So taking action if you think you have phlebitis before complications arise is well worth it. So why do you have phlebitis. Well first of all, it is important to tell you that phlebitis is short hand for superficial vein thrombosis.

There is in fact clot in the vein that is stimulating inflammation. The clot may have developed because the blood is abnormally sticky, because of sticky vein walls or because the blood is not flowing normally. The important message here is that inflammation and clot can extend and propagate – clot causes more inflammation and inflammation causes more clot. This is why phlebitis can turn quickly into a deep vein clot and clots in the deep veins can cause pulmonary embolism.

Now to part you really want to know. How can you get rid of phlebitis? As you now know, phlebitis is important so get is sorted out quickly. Don’t delay seeking help. The longer you have phlebitis the more likely you are to get a deep vein thrombosis. Request an assessment by a vein specialist and request a duplex ultrasound scan to look at the leg veins in detail. A scan will confirm the diagnosis of phlebitis and it will guide appropriate treatment which is some cases will be blood thinning medication and in others anti-inflammatory medication called NSAIDs - non-steroidal inflammatory drugs. The treatment protocol is shown in detail here.

So here are my top tips. Get help as soon as you think you may have phlebitis, request an assessment by a vein specialist including a vein duplex scan and get the right treatment.
