Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is known as adhesive capsulitis. The shoulder is made of the humerus and scapula coming across. We have all kinds of muscles becoming tendons, defuses that joint capsule that help control that should motion. In frozen shoulder, we start getting scar tissue that seizes up that capsule and starts losing its flexibility, ability to turn, rotate twist and lift. So in a shoulder, instead of being a nice healthy capsule, we start getting scar tissue formations across. That formation ends up limiting the motion so pretty soon people can't lift above their head and the more it starts going through the freezing stages, it locks that shoulder down even more. Eventually limitations can be very severe and people can hardly move their arm, can't reach back behind them. Any of those small movements we take for granted disappear.

This is a condition that will resolve on its own. It can take anywhere from six months to a couple of years. Therapy helps to try and break up that scar tissue faster, to help get the normal motion back and help restore the normal strength across the shoulder to regain those movements. The three stages we go through is that initial freezing where things are locking down, the thawing as it's coming back out. Everybody's progression's going to be a little different. It can be enhanced with proper treatment and therapy in office.
