Ear Surgery at University of Michigan Health System
[ Music ] In the division of otology, we see and treat any problem related to the ear, from as simple as the perforation in the eardrum, to the most complex tumors of the ear, whether they're benign or malignant. We welcome that because it gives us an opportunity to serve our community, and that's why we're here. The patients rightly expect that their physicians will be, not just fully training, but experienced surgeons with good clinical judgment. Amongst our surgeons, we have more than 60 years of combined experience of treating and doing surgery exclusively on ear problems. Choosing an experienced ear surgeon, proper training is essential. Our department, of course, is very so specialized so we have people who do nothing but ear surgery, 100% of their career. If you just received a certain diagnosis that needs ear surgery, coming through the University of Michigan will give you the best chance of meeting very well-trained and experienced physicians that are supported by great support staff that provide world-class diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Most patients are going to have symptoms that they're eager to get rid of, particularly if they've come some distance. So we try to clarify that. We tried to make sure their questions are answered, and when we explain the situation and our recommendations, we try to give them the time and attention that they need to help them understand their condition as best as possible. We try to incorporate the patient and their families in decision making, in fact they are the decision makers. Our role is basically to advise them and to give them all the information they need to make an informed decision. I really think if the patient comes in to an operation with a positive outlook, they've been part of the decision that leads to the choice to have surgery.
They want to enter that experience with confidence in their surgical team every time people come in from the outside as guest professors, they are impressed by everything that we have, and the level of excellence and camaraderie that we enjoy as a group of surgeons. We get along well. We encourage and support each other.
Sharpen each other professionally. And support each other personally. This is where I want to practice until I finish my career. You cannot buy talent and the talent that we have here really is tremendous, and has been built over many, many years. [ Music ].
