Dr James Clayton - Foot and Ankle Surgeon | SPORTSMED·SA
Hi, I'm James Clayton. I'm an Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon here. I come from a sporting background myself and certainly I always wanted to do medicine since I was a school student to be able to help people. Originally I worked as a volunteer lifesaver up in Sydney where I grew up and so the natural progression was into medicine, but with my sporting background as well I certainly want to be able to help sports people. I used to do some work with the Adelaide Thunderbirds, now mostly I work with Netball Australia, but I also do most the foot and ankle surgery work for the elite sports people around Adelaide, so the Port Adelaide Power, the Adelaide 36ers and a number of the SANFL teams amongst others. I've certainly been involved in the development of equipment and techniques in foot and ankle surgery.
Perhaps the most recent one certainly, is minimally invasive surgery for ladies feet for bunion surgery. Being able to do it by keyhole surgery rather than open techniques. At the moment and present, I'm the only one offering that in Adelaide, but it's certainly taken Europe and the UK by storm and it's become very popular over the last 18 months in the eastern states certainly too, and it's the way forward.
My other main interest besides sports injuries is comestic surgery, so bunion and hammer toe surgery straightening out toes for people, which may or not be for painful reasons, it may be for more cosmetic reasons and especially for young women that want to have a nice looking feet and to wear high-heeled shoes, but finally I also do a bit of arthritic work for older people's feet, who have had previous injuries when they're younger and they develop arthritis in their ankle or their feet, and we will look after that as well.
