Diet & Nutrition : What to Take to Help Your Immune System
Hi, I'm Charlotte Skiles, nutrition consultant and clinical herbalist with Eat in Peace Wellness Consulting, located in Austin, Texas. And today's topic is what to take for your immune system. I'm going to rephrase this just a little bit because you can take lots of things for your immune system, but if, on a daily basis, you're eating something that you're allergic to, it's really not going to matter what you take.
So the idea here is to find out -- and this is a great experiment for anybody -- find out if you have an undiagnosed or unrecognized food allergy. And this is beyond what any doctor can test for. This is about understanding how foods behave in your particular system. So the idea here is to do an elimination diet, and this is so crucial just to know as a baseline for how your body runs because up to 75 percent of the population has some sort of allergic reaction to dairy, for instance. And the next one following is wheat, and soy and corn aren't far behind those two, so those are four foods that really are so...I mean, they're everywhere in our food supply, and if you're eating them all the time, your immune system is going to suffer because your immune system exists in your digestive tract. So elimination diet basically involves, with the help of another health professional, such as myself or another nutritionist, holding your hand and showing you how to eliminate foods from the diet and then introduce them back to see if there are any reactions. But as a general broad spectrum recommendation for what to take for your immune system, I definitely recommend cod liver oil. Cod liver oil is a very great source of vitamin A and D, which are two fat-soluble vitamins that play a key role in the health of the digestive tract and the health of the immune system, not to mention the benefits of the essential fatty acids -- the omega 3s that are in the cod liver oil.
And that is a distinction that's often missed is that cod liver oil has the vitamins in it, where fish oil is just the essential fatty acids. So I like to throw that out there as a bit of a distinction. I'm recommending cod liver oil for your immune system. So check out with your body and see if you might have any of those underlying food allergies and it will be a huge gift to yourself.
