Causes of Heel Pain Besides Plantar Fasciitis
Hi, I’m Dr. Danciger from Palm Desert, California. Today I wanted to discuss two other causes of heel pain. Not every heel pain issue that patients have is caused from plantar fasciitis or a heel spur. One cause of heel pain can be as a result of a stress fracture of the heel. People who start an exercise program and do a lot of running, jumping, or other forms of exercise when they’re not used to it, over the repetitive pounding can actually cause a stress fracture into the heel, and that can cause pain. A lot of times the way that we can know about this and determine it is if you actually take each side of the heel and squeeze it and there’s pain with that, there could be indications of a stress fracture or a fracture of the heel, and then an x-ray is indicated to diagnose and properly treat that.
Another form of heel pain, outside of a heel spur and plantar fasciitis, is nerve issues. You have a nerve that comes along the inside of the ankle and a lot of times it branches off down here and compression of that particular nerve, or the other large nerve that goes along here to the bottom of the inside of the foot and the bottom of the outside of the foot becomes compressed because there’s a ligament. Think of a tight rubber band that stretches across here and that pushes on the ligament as well as the muscles in that area, compress it, causing pain to the heel. A lot of times, if you tap on that area, you’ll get a tingling sensation that can go up this way or further into the foot.
These are just two other causes of heel pain and you should see your podiatrist to diagnose them and get proper treatment. Again, this is Dr. Danciger in Palm Desert, CA.
